Evolution Emerging 2013 - Review

Venue: Cluny 2
Date 25.5.2013

Evolution Emerging is a platform to give emerging artists in the North East. This year numerous acts entered with different venues spread out across the Ouseburn Valley pubs. Each artist plays a short setlist of approximately 30 minutes. Since I had not been to this area of Newcastle before I decided to go to the venue where I would be most likely to enjoy the most artists. I decided to go to the Cluny 2 for my first experience of North Eastern Live music.

Unfortunately due to leaving the house late I missed the first artist Agerskow. The first act that I was able to see was Micky Moran Parker. He had a very good voice, easily holding together the songs that have been crafted to suit his vocal talents. Him and his supporting band delivered a very professional offering with decent crowd interaction, made all the remarkale when I was told that they had been practising for around two weeks. 4/5

Next up was Faith Elliot. Faith is an accoustic singer-song writer with songs which reminded me of Eliza Gilkyson. The focus of the songs here were tales of having bad experiences with people. As a completed sucker for this type of music I was impressed by a heartfealt performance. It was music that I think would fit perfectly with Kate Atkinson's Case Histories Novels. 4/5

The penultimate act was Tesserea Skies, this band reminded me of a mix between if Sigur Ros met Pink Floyd (Think guitar work on Dark Side of the Moon). They were enjoyable without being outstanding, filling the room with their atmospheric music yet didn't seem to get out of second gear. Whilst enjoyable this was my least favourite act of the evening. 3.5/5

Now to the headlining act, Nadine Shah. Having never heard of her before I was completely blown away. Nadine has a powerful voice that evokes a whole hearted style much similar Mai Yamane (of Cowboy Bebop Fame). Several of her songs were  haunting especially Dreary Town. I doubt that she will be playing such venues for much longer.  5/5.

All in all this was a great first venture into beginning to discover live music in Newcastle. I plan to return many time during my time here.
