Artist: Mr. B. The Gentleman Rhymer.
Venue: Cluny 2
Date:12/7/2013
A little bit late with this review but as in my previous posts it has been a busy month. Mr. B is one of the self-styled pioneers of of Chap-Hop along with Professor Elemental. This genre combines Hip Hop with particular aspects of English "chappish" culture such as cricket, tea and chinos. This fused with his Banjo and Yukele give Mr. B. a unique sound.
Playing a staple of his hits (All Hail the Chap/History of Hip Hop) with newer songs from his upcoming album 'Can't Stop, Shan't Stop'. In true Hip Hop fashion, other works are also sampled and reimagined through yukele and banjo playing. This includes songs from many artists such as Eminem and Bob Seger. This works because the whole of show is somewhat less of a live music show but actually a comedy show with music. Many of the songs themselves are genuinely funny and they are performed with great gusto. One particular highlight is in an audience to and fro where Mr. B., leads with, "Byker", which was met with a resounding, "Grove", from the crowd. It was then revealed that Mr. B. is assisted in his live show by his "butler", whose facial expressions and on stage chemistry with Mr. B. works well, particularly when he gets his chance to sing a song.
This performance was well worked performance from an artist who interacts with a crowd. This was the second time I had seen Mr. B., the first time was when he was just starting out, I am pleased to say that his live show has improved immensely since then. I hope that Mr. B. gets more recognition and the opportunity to play on larger stages.
